Similar to previous speakers, I urge a note of caution. The impetus seems to be focused on introducing a ban on social media for those under 16. Deputy Malcolm Byrne mentioned the importance of getting the input of children in the decision-making process. The children's committee held a number of meetings regarding this issue. It met experts from the world of academia and those who worked with children and young people. It also met young people themselves, who had very strong feelings about the practicalities of this ban and how it would work, if, indeed, it did work. There was a much stronger feeling that we must be better at holding the platforms and social media companies to account for the content on their platforms and for the addictive methods they use to ensure that young people are using them excessively.
