Yesterday we saw the announcement of new special classes across the country and, for the first time, the introduction of these new so-called classes or hubs which will be in our schools and in which schools can enrol up to 12 students. I welcome proposals and reform but they do not negate the need for appropriate classes. I note the name of the proposed model is "inclusive autism classes". All autism classes are inclusive - I think the Tánaiste will agree with me on that. Was any consultation done with stakeholders or schools about this? How will schools be supported? It is my understanding there will be no increase in staffing. Will there be an opt-out facility? It also raises serious questions about the apparent contradiction in the Minister, Deputy Foley, stating diagnosis will not be required for primary school while introducing classes that appear to rely on an autism-specific threshold for access. Will the Tánaiste please clarify?
