I recently met with the parents of an adult child with an intellectual disability. They told me that they were involved with the Before We Die campaign. Over 2,000 parents over 70 years of age are caring for adult children with intellectual disabilities, a rise of 20% since 2020, and there are nearly 500 who are in their 80s. These are parents who are mentally, physically and emotionally stressed as to what is going to happen to their children after they pass away. It is woefully under-resourced. People with disabilities are people with rights too. Will the Government commit to delivering more residential places for adults with intellectual disabilities? Respite services are closed. There is little support from housing and little tie-in with local authorities. It is causing enormous stress.
