Online Safety (Recommender Algorithms) Bill 2026: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members]

Back to Debate
The following motion was moved by Deputy Paul Murphy on 4 March 2026: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time."
Debate resumed on amendment No. 1:
To delete all words after "That" and substitute the following:
"Dáil Éireann declines to give the Online Safety (Recommender Algorithms) Bill 2026 a second reading, on the grounds that the issues the Bill seeks to address are already being addressed by Coimisiún na Meán, Ireland's independent online safety and media regulator, through its implementation of Ireland's Online Safety Framework, together with the European Commission.".
- (Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport).
I must now deal with a deferred division relating to the ministerial amendment to the Second Reading motion on the Online Safety (Recommender Algorithms) Bill 2026. On the question, "That the amendment to the motion be made", a division was claimed, and in accordance with Standing Order 85(2), that division must be taken now.

The Dáil divided: Tá, 80; Níl, 63; Staon, 0.
Tellers: Tá, Deputies Mary Butler and Emer Currie; Níl, Deputies Paul Murphy and Richard Boyd Barrett.
